Sedation Dentist Downtown San Diego Q & A
What is oral sedation?
Oral sedation, also known as sleep or sedation dentistry, is a service that Fifth Avenue Dental Arts offers to patients who struggle with the thought of visiting the dentist, due to dental anxiety or phobia.
Oral sedation helps you relax while you’re visiting the practice so that the team can address your dental needs without making you anxious.
What is dental phobia?
Many people get a bit anxious before they go to the dentist. Dental phobia, though, is different. Dental phobia is characterized by:
- Increased agitation as you sit in the dentist’s waiting area
- Trouble sleeping the night before your visit
- Becoming physically ill at the thought of going to the dentist
- Wanting to cry after hearing anything dental-related
- Feeling panicky when a dental tool is placed in your mouth
If any of these characterizations sound like you, you likely have a dental phobia. If so, that’s okay and nothing to be ashamed of, just let the practice know, and they’ll be happy to accommodate you with oral sedation.
How does oral sedation work?
If you opt for oral sedation, the practice provides you with medication that you take at home shortly before you go to your appointment. In the form of a small pill, this medication relaxes you enough so that by the time you get to the dentist, you feel much more at ease.
Once you arrive, the practice evaluates you and provides you with additional pills. These pills usually allow you to drift off into a safe and comfortable sleep during your appointment.
However, if you don’t want to sleep during your appointment, the practice can also give you a dose that will allow you to reach a state of deep relaxation.
Once your appointment is over, your team gently wakes you up. You must bring someone with you to your appointment so that they can drive you home, as you’ll be very drowsy afterward.
Don’t let dental phobia get in the way of your oral health. Instead, reach out to Fifth Avenue Dental Arts to learn about oral sedation and how it can help you. To get started, call the practice or request an appointment online.
